For late(r) in life identified Neurocomplex (Autistic, ADHDer, or Gifted) individuals, internalized capitalism often plays a devious role in our masking strategies as well as the development of our self-worth.

Internalized capitalism refers to the way in which individuals adopt and internalize capitalist values and ideologies, often without conscious awareness—so no shame in the realization that you were essentially inculcated into this ideology. In capitalist societies, people are socialized to value productivity, competition, material success, and individual achievement, and this can become ingrained in their self-concept and daily behaviors. Essentially, it’s the process by which capitalist norms and expectations shape one’s thinking, actions, and personal goals.

Internalized Capitalism in Neurocomplexity

How can internalized capitalism specifically impact the Neurocomplex? Well, I’ve created another detailed downloadable chart! This time to visually depict how internalized capitalism may directly impede the development of self-worth and identification of neurodivergence, ultimately leading to (at least one phase of) burnout, in Neurocomplex beings. This model also provides tips for challenging internalized capitalism and reclaiming your authentic, neurodivergent self-worth outside of this structure.

Here is a small portion of the larger chart. **Download the whole document by scrolling to the bottom of this page.**
